50th Chekhov's Celebration of Life, Sept. 2005

Home | Acting Workshops | About MCC

We held two beautiful Celebrations of Mr. Chekhov's Life and Legacy at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Hollywood Hills on Sept. 30, 2005.

We used Chekhov's Law of Triplicity for our form. Although the skies of the valley were filled with smoke from the wild fires, the flames of three candles burned brightly at the Chekhov gravesite. Mr. Chekhov is now passed 50 years ago and lies next to Xenia who crossed over in Dec. 1970. Surrounded by 3 wild roses the grave markers are simple and yet powerful. One-multiple branched, fading pink rose with petals and seeds falling, like those Chekhovians who carried the work forth and planted the seeds for today. Another rose, this one red and in full bloom like those who are carrying Mr. Chekhov's work in the present. One yellow rose just budding like a new actor about to learn the most inspiring approach to acting that they will know and who will eventually carry the work in the future.

With a three part celebration, we read some notes from folks who could not join us in person and each of us present spoke to Mr. C of our gratitutde and deep appreciation. For another part, we listened to his wonderful talk on the nature of the Spirit, the necessity of acknolwedging it and it's power to synthesize. You can listen to this on the audio series On Theatre and the Art of Acting-the 3rd guiding principle. We concluded with a sweet rendition of Amazing Grace. mc 50th quote2

On Sept. 30, 2005 We celebrate Michael Chekhov with a graveside gathering where Chekhov fans from around the world shared their thoughts.
Here are a few:

I realized early in my life that I wanted to create
living art. I didn't know how that would look really
but it was a craving. Later in life, I learned that you
should train.

I tried this and that class but the teachers all seemed either to
want to wring things out of my personal life that I didn't
think needed ot be wrung or they taught by rigid rules that
felt, to me, the antithesis of creativity.

Then, I came across the writings of Chekhov. As I read
each page, I became more excited and finally elated. Here
it was, on paper, the way that I naturally approached the
craft! What a discovery.

I am so very grateful for this man. And for those who carry
on his legacy. To Lisa Dalton I say Bravo! and Thank you.

To Michael, wherever he may be now and on whatever grand
adventure, the world is a richer place because of you. You are
deeply missed by we who never met you but your works
stand steadfast in our hearts.
