Requirements:
Students interested in level certification must hold a
bachelor’s degree or the professional equivalent as
determined by the faculty. Students are expected to attend
two summer intensive sessions for a total of 8 credits, and complete an
independent project approved by the instructors for an additional 1
credit, bringing the total credits to 9 in order to receive the
certificate. The final project will be presented either at
the conclusion of the second intensive attended, or at a separate date
as arranged with the instructors. Students must successfully
complete all course requirements as outlined below within a three year
period from the beginning of formal registration as a certificate
candidate.
Daily Log:
Students must keep a daily log outlining the techniques introduced each
day and their reactions, which will be submitted at the end of the
course. A xerox of the log is acceptable. This may also be
submitted within 10 days of course completion with the final paper.
Performance:
Each student must participate as either and actor or director in the
public presentation at the end of each institute. In addition, each
student must act or direct a final monologue employing the techniques
from the course. The script for the final monologue must be submitted
with legible technique references written in the margins for the
choices being executed.
Teaching:
Each student must prepare a one-hour lesson plan that gives an overview
of the Michael Chekhov technique or certain aspects of it, with
approval by faculty prior to teaching, and submit that lesson plan
prior to the teaching assignment.
Feedback will be provided by faculty and peers.
Final Paper:
At the conclusion of each intensive program or within 10 days of
completion (Sept. 4th), each participant must submit a 5-7 page typed,
double-spaced, standard font paper which summarizes the techniques
gained, states reactions to both the techniques and the presentations,
and proposes the participant’s plans for utilizing the
techniques in the future. This paper may be emailed to William Kilroy
<kilroy@usm.maine.edu> and Lisa Dalton
<chekhov@sbcglobal.net> or FAXED Att: Wil
Kilroy to 207-780-5641, or copies mailed to Professor Wil Kilroy, Dept.

faculty.
Upon completion of the project, participants must submit a portfolio
documenting the project which must include but is not limited to: daily
journal entries for the duration of the project outlining process and
progress; a 5-page summary paper of the insight gained as a result of
the project and a short video documentary of the project, which should
result in a 30 minute presentation.
ADDITIONAL NOTES ON
THE
PROJECT
The thesis project is designed to demonstrate that you as a candidate
have a sufficiently thorough knowledge of the technique and are
effective in communicating the positive and inspiring tools to your
clients.
We are interested not only in your understanding specific tools and
teaching them, but also the high priority placed on How we work with
people to cultivate "better human beings" through positive
reinforcement and accurate self evaluation.
The project is most often done on a class or production or combination
of the two. The documentation usually includes written documents such
as:
For a Class that is
the
project:
- A paper outlining Goals of your project
- A journal you kept through the project
- A self assessment-"spy/flyback" of the whole project
- Samples of student's written assignments such as
- Sketches of Imaginary Bodies, Samples of Script
analysis,
character studies
- Samples of any performance programs
- Feedback from students, fellow faculty, audiences
Video Compilation:
- Interviews with students/cast- before, during, after
- Clips of any performance demonstrating the
work
in action
- Any additional information you deem relevant.
For a
production:
- As above but specifically including a copy of the
script
with notations
- A graph of the composition of the play
- Rehearsal journal revealing active use of the tools
- Any reviews or audience response
- Programs from shows
- Video Interviews with audience, cast, scenes in
rehearsal-same scene in performance, could include entire play or
highlights.
- Costume, light, set, PR designs revealing use of the
tools
for artistic unity
- Flybacks by the cast and by the candidate, etc.
Including things that reveal personal growth of you and your students
are of particular interest. Including stumbling blocks and
how you addressed them is also important. We will continue to support
you in your development after you receive your certificate if you ask
us and if it is at all possible. We want you to bring the work very
powerfully into the world and will continue to support you. So
including what you feel you yet need more of will help us with that.
Additionally, if you have some things that you know you don't know
well enough before your second session, please let us know
before the workshop as we can begin to help clarify
those things.
