PROGRAMME
OF CLASSES
2008 -2009
Deep within ourselves, within the treasure house of our souls, are
buried tremendous creative powers and abilities, but they remain unused
as long as we do not know about them or as long as we deny them.
Michael Chekhov
THE DEEPENING
A unique
opportunity to embody in depth Michael Chekhov’s
artistic and innovative approach to acting and theatre.

The most thorough Michael Chekhov training in this country.

DEEPENING 1
The Actor’s Body & The Inner Life
Participants explore the relationship between their own inner life and
the outer world through the senses, movement, space and the voice.
Chekhov's fundamental principle of the psycho-physical is the core of
this intensive: the exploration includes work with gesture, archetypes,
the psychological gesture and centres.
Dates: Monday, October 13 – Wednesday, December 17 2008
The Deepening gave me new directions on how to constantly
improve as an actor, on how to work with my blocks.
Julia Krynke, Deepening participant 2008
DEEPENING 2
The Actor’s Inner Life & The Creative Self
Deepening 2 focuses on Michael Chekhov’s creative process and
encourages the actor to engage his or her higher self in that process.
Techniques explored include developing tools for characterisation;
schooling the imagination and incorporating images; atmospheres;
individual feelings; improvisation and ensemble work.
Dates: Monday January 12 – Wednesday, March 18 2009
The course provided a great platform for discovering more
about my artistic potential. There was a good balance between
repeating exercises/techniques and introducing new concepts.
Klemens Koehring, Deepening participant 2008
DEEPENING 3
The Creative Process in Rehearsal & Performance
All the techniques and principles at the heart of Michael Chekhov’s
approach to the art of acting are applied to the rehearsal and ensemble
process and lead to performance.
N.B.: Deepening 3 is only open to those who have taken part in at least

Applying the work to scene and text is what gave me belief in the work
and confidence in my ability as a performer.

COURSE FACILITATORS
Graham Dixon & Sarah Kane
Sarah and Graham were both very open and conducted
their teaching with great generosity and integrity.
Sinead Rushe, Deepening participant 2008
It was obvious that both teachers truly embody the principles.
Sarah Purcell, Deepening participant 2008
Graham Dixon
As a young actor in Sydney, Australia, Graham was fortunate to have had
as a speech tutor Alice Crowther, who worked with Michael Chekhov as
the Speech and Eurythmy teacher at Dartington Hall, Devon, in 1936, and
later at Ridgefield, USA. Working as a professional actor in Australia,
Graham later continued his speech training at the Goetheanum in
Switzerland. His company, Dionysia, has been presenting fairytales and
devised Shakespeare programmes since 1980 in Australia and Europe.
Graham is a founding member of the Michael Chekhov Centre UK and is
director of the Michael Chekhov Studio London.
Sarah Kane
Sarah completed her four-year voice and speech training before studying
privately Michael Chekhov’s technique over a number of years with,
among others, original Chekhov students Joanna Merlin, Ted Pugh and
Dierdre Hurst du Prey. Since 1989 she has been teaching the Chekhov
technique in actor training in Europe and the USA and working as a
director with actor trainings and theatre companies using Michael
Chekhov’s approach. These include the Stanislavski Theatre
Studio, Washington DC, and the Goetheanum Stage Ensemble, Basel. Sarah
is co-founder of the Michael Chekhov Centre UK and a board member of
MICHA, the Michael Chekhov Association, USA.
