Teacher Certificate Candidate Program
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Certification Requirements
Students interested in certification must hold a bachelor’s degree
or professional equivalent, as determined by the faculty. Candidates
will attend TWO (2) Theatre Intensive sessions (1-week each)
over 3-years or less and complete an independent Thesis Project, approved
by the instructors. The final project will
be presented during Teacher Day at the conclusion of the second Theatre
Intensive attended, or at a separate date arranged with the instructors.
Students must successfully complete course requirements within
a three year period from the beginning of formal registration as a Teacher
Certificate Candidate (TCC).
Program requirements during/after each Theatre Intensive:
Daily Log: Candidates must keep a daily log outlining the techniques
introduced each day and their reactions, which will be submitted at the
end of the course. A xerox of the log is acceptable. This may also be
submitted within 10-days of course completion with the final paper.
Performance: Each Candidate must participate in the public presentation
at the end of each Theatre Institute. In addition, each candidate
must present a monologue employing the techniques from
the course. The script for the monologue must be submitted with legible
technique references written in the margins for the choices being executed. Instructions
for this are covered.
Teaching: Each candidate must prepare a one-hour lesson plan that
gives an overview of selected Michael Chekhov techniques, with approval
by faculty prior to teaching, and submit that lesson plan prior to the
teaching assignment. A 20-minute portion of that lesson plan will be taught
by the candidate to other TCCs during the Teacher day of each Theatre Institute. Feedback
will be provided by faculty and peers thereafter.
Final Intensive Review Paper: At the conclusion of each Theatre
Intensive program, or within 10 days of completion, each participant must
submit a 5-7 page typed, double-spaced, standard paper which summarizes
the techniques gained during that Institute, states reactions to
techniques and presentations, and proposes the participant’s plans
for utilizing the techniques in the future.
Thesis Project: After the first Theatre Institute and by the end
of the 3rd year after initial enrollment in the TCC Program, the candidate
will create a Thesis Project, after approval of the instructors, which
use the Michael Chekhov tools in practical application. This project may
include acting, directing, or teaching. The project must utilize the techniques
and information gained via the program and actively apply them to the
chosen project. Projects must receive pre-approval from the faculty.
Upon completion of the project, participants must submit a portfolio documenting
the project, which must include, but is not limited to: daily journal
entries for the duration of the project outlining process and progress;
a 5-page summary paper of the insight gained as a result of the project.
and a short video documentary of the project, which should result in a
30 minute presentation. The candidate will present this final presentation
to the Teacher Candidates during the Teacher Day of a final Theatre Institute.
The Thesis Project may be completed as soon as the end of the 2nd attended
Theatre Institute, or at a Theatre Institute in the years after the 2nd
attended Institute, as long as it is presented within the 3-year program
time limit. The candidate does NOT have to attend a full 3rd Institute,
but must attend the Teacher Day of that Institute. For special arrangements,
contact the Program Office.
ADDITIONAL NOTES ON THE THESIS PROJECT
-
The Thesis Project is designed to demonstrate that a candidate
has a sufficiently thorough knowledge of the technique and are
effective in communicating the positive and inspiring tools to clients,
students or cast.
We are interested not only in understanding specific tools
and teaching them, but also the high priority placed on How we work
with people to cultivate "better human beings" through positive
reinforcement and accurate self evaluation.
The Thesis Project is most often done on a class or production or
combination of the two. The documentation usually includes written
documents described below:

are of particular interest. Including stumbling blocks and how
they were addressed is also important.
NMCA, Inc. continues
to support Teachers in further development after receiving
a certificate. NMCA, Inc. wants you to bring the work very powerfully
into the world and we will continue to support you. So including
what you need more of will help us. Additionally,
